Friday was Kumar's first visit to the national capital after he jettisoned the alliance with the RJD and the Congress, and sealed a tie-up with the BJP on July 26.

Shah's invite to Nitish to join the NDA was only a formality after he led his party out of the Grand Alliance in Bihar and formed a new government in the state with the help of the BJP. Yadav has been replaced with Bihar Chief Minister and party chief Nitish Kumar's close aide RCP Sinha.

Several JD (U) leaders, including Yadav, were miffed with Kumar's "unilateral" decision. The party is recognised in Bihar only, where he does not have a single MLA or MP.

Following Yadav's sacking, Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu declared Ram Chandra Prasad Singh as the new JD (U) leader in the House on a written representation by party general-secretary Sanjay Jha. Asked if the party would join the Modi cabinet, a JD (U) leader said such a decision would be "natural". The decision of the public was against the BJP-led NDA alliance. We founded the party.

Investors said the rhetoric may have sparked some selling, but it wasn't exclusively to blame for the sharp fall. The U.S. equity market is hovering near record levels and volume has been tepid following the onset of summer.

Sharad Yadav said "Jab hum Indira Gandhi se nahi dare aur unke khilaf khade hue, kisi aur se kaisa darna", he said.

Hitting out at Kumar, Anwar said that people who brought the party to its glory were being "removed" from party posts.

He added that this was not a personal fight against Nitish Kumar but a fight of principles and to save democracy and brotherhood.

Speculation swirled over his remarks that the party could suspend him. The leaders standing with Nitish are threatening the other leaders who support me. Sharad Yadav has called a conclave on "sanjhi virasat bachao" (save composite culture) at Constitution Club in the capital. We were ready to go there and put forth our views, but Nitish seems to be afraid of what we will say. "Kumar's decision to align with the BJP is unacceptable", Ansari said.
