Hawaii Five-0: Daniel Dae Kim says exit over maintaining 'sense of self-worth'

Daniel Dae Kim Says 'Hawaii Five-0' Exit Was a Matter of 'Self-Worth'

Over a month after news broke that Daniel Dae Kim would not be returning to "Hawaii Five-0" over a salary dispute, the actor was asked to address the matter during an appearance at the Television Critics Assn. press tour.

Kim's new chapter is as an executive producer of ABC's The Good Doctor, which stars Freddie Highmore as Dr. Shaun Murphy, a young surgeon with autism and Savant syndrome who is recruited into the pediatric surgical unit of a prestigious hospital.

"I'm very proud to be part of this show", said Kim, who is exec producer on The Good Doctor, which he says he first saw several years ago in Korea and brought to ABC. I've known [CBS executives] Kelly [Kahl] and Thom Sherman for a while, Thom all the way back to my days on "Lost.' I've gotten to know them and I like them, and I'm grateful for the words that they said on the panel the other day".

"That said, it's possible to be grateful and respectful, and still maintain a steadfast sense of your self worth", Kim said, pointedly.

Kim is referring to a CBS session with the network executives on Monday, in which Kahl was asked about the "Five-0" stars leaving the show. "All good things come to an end and I closed that chapter on Hawaii Five-0 and I begin this chapter on The Good Doctor". I couldn't be more excited to be back at ABC where I started my career. "I am grateful to CBS and everyone involved for the opportunity... I feel like I'm learning (new things)", he said.

"We love both those actors and did not want to lose them". "I'm really content being behind the scenes of this show", he says. "I loved the message of it and it was a very familiar genre to American audiences and I thought it would be a good opportunity to make it in America". "It's in good hands of David and the cast..." Kim later confirmed the exit and while he didn't explicitly cite the pay inequality as a reason for his departure, he wrote how "a$3 s an Asian American actor, I know first-hand how hard it is to find opportunities at all, let alone play a well developed, three dimensional character like Chin Ho".

"The Good Doctor", about a physician with autism starring Freddie Highmore ("Bates Motel"), premieres September 25 on ABC.
