Keith Ellison: 'Irresponsible' Trump could bring about first strike by North Korea

The Labour leader's warning comes after he called on Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un to hold direct talks "in the interest of sanity".

"You have this guy making bellicose threats against somebody else who has very little to lose over there", he said, referring to Trump.

"Kim Jong Un? The world thought he was not a responsible leader".

"I've traveled and (seen) the anti-ballistic missiles that we have in Alaska, South Korea, Guam as part of my service on the Armed Services Committee", she continued.

On Tuesday, Trump said North Korea "will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen" if it continues to threaten the United States, after North Korea warned it will teach the USA a "severe lesson" with its nuclear weapons if Washington would dare to opt for military action against Pyongyang.

Upon leaving the panel, Ellison sought to do damage control, telling The Washington Post's Dave Weigel that he wished he had not made the remark. "It's tailor-made for somebody to misuse".
