The search continues off Fanad Head

Divers have arrived at the scene of a major search operation ongoing off the Donegal coast near Fanad Head today, Sunday, and are now searching a shipwreck where a diver went missing yesterday.

The Lough Swilly lifeboat, Portrush lifeboat and coastguard helicopter are involved in the search.

Gardai and emergency personnel have also been called in to help locate the missing person, along with a massive local effort from fishermen.

The alarm was raised shortly before 4pm when Malin Head Coastgurad received a report that a diver had not returned to surface after a deep dive.

Due to the suspected serious nature of the injuries, Rescue 118 was dispatched from its Sligo base to airlift the casualty to hospital.

"By nightfall, no progress was reported and a full scale search will resume in the morning", he added.
