Windows Subsystem for Linux exits beta, coming later this year

Microsoft has confirmed the end of service for Windows 10 version 1511 (Build 10586) for Current Branch (CB) and Current Branch for Business (CBB) on October 10, 2017.

The work is already apace.

Official support means deeper hooks in the OS, official Microsoft team members assigned to support and development, and all kinds of other good stuff.

"Bringing Eye Control to Windows 10 will empower people using just their eyes to utilize Windows features", said Jenny Lay-Flurrie, Chief Accessibility Officer at Microsoft.

Turner characterized the Windows Subsystem for Linux as relatively stable and getting few changes before its coming release.

Earlier this year Microsoft announced at their annual Build conference that several Linux distributions would be made available to run on top of Windows 10.

However, alongside of these new hardware options, those of you in Education can now begin testing Windows 10 S on your eligible hardware as you prepare/plan for a wider roll out. It runs a command line, it will share files with Windows, it will invoke Windows processes from Linux and invoke Linux processes from Windows. The subsystem will support other Linux distros as well, such as Fedora and SUSE Linux, and Microsoft recently clarified that these distros will be accessible from the Windows Store. "Eye tracking support in Windows 10 has the potential to form a new paradigm that fundamentally transforms how we interact with our devices". From within Linux, users can access Windows files and run Windows commands.

And on to the marketing flannel: "The removal of the beta tag will result in a continued improvement in product quality over time, and demonstrates our continued commitment to making Windows a great platform upon which to run your Linux tools". Microsoft says that it will support the WSL infrastructure and tooling while the distro-publishers are responsible for the internals of their distro.
