Regardless, Carrey is destined to return to the medium on which he first gained acclaim (short-lived 1984 sitcom The Duck Factory notwithstanding, ) with a Showtime comedy series called Kidding.

The main character, to be played by Carrey, is named Jeff (a.k.a. Mr. Pickles), an icon of children's TV whose life slowly begins to unravel. But when his family enters crisis mode, Jeff's jubilant façade begins to crack, and so begins his slow descent into madness.

Showtime president David Nevins described the show as "like watching Humpty Dumpty after the fall".

Kidding is slated to stream exclusively on Stan in 2018. This is his first major TV series gig since his stint on Fox's sketch comedy series In Living Color, which helped launch his movie career. However, fans of Carrey's more poignant roles will be pleased to hear that his small-screen-headlining comeback will reunite him with a potent visionary behind the camera in Michel Gondry, who directed Carrey - opposite Kate Winslet - in the beloved surrealistic romance film, 2004's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. "With his Eternal Sunshine partner Michael Gondry on board to direct, we are on our way to a magnetic, volcanic and emotional viewing experience".

Both Jim and Michel will serve as executive producers on the programme, alongside Jason Bateman. Viewers will watch how a kind man has to cope in with a cruel world and how to find the humour in sad situations. Holstein, whose credits also include Weeds and Raising Hope, will serve as showrunner. The official synopsis for Kidding seems to be tailor-made for Jim Carrey's comedic talents and looks like it could take a dark turn as well. 1994 saw Carrey jump from TV to the big screen with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber and turn into a mega star.

Jim Carrey has also been exhibiting some weird behavior lately that have led many to speculate about depression from personal problems that have been following him for the last few years.

Carrey next has Netflix documentary Jim & Andy, which debuted to solid reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival.
