3 takeaways from dominant win over North Carolina

The Tar Heels are 1-6 (0-4) on the season and are about to be eliminated from bowl eligibility this season. Virginia Tech scored twice on defense, getting the first score of the game on defensive tackle Ricky Walker's 12-yard fumble return.

The Tar Heels amassed just 172 yards of total offense and turned the ball over three times in what has to be one of the worst offensive showings in college football this season.

The Hokies added a 91-yard punt return for a touchdown by Greg Stroman - his second punt return for a score this season - and a 69-yard interception return for a touchdown from defensive back Reggie Floyd. The Tar Heels have four conference losses to the Louisville Cardinals, the Duke Blue Devils, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and the Virginia Cavaliers. They played three quarterbacks - Chazz Surratt, Brandon Harris and Nathan Elliott - and none were effective. The Hokies rank third in the ACC in time of possession, holding the ball for 32:30 per game.

Gaulden said what he did was out of character and not how his parents raised him. The Crimson Tide controlled the second half in every aspect.

The Tar Heels went into their locker room with that margin a little less than two years after it had been home to one of their most jubilant celebrations.

Virginia Tech: The Hokies should move up in the poll, considering their strong performance Saturday and given Oklahoma State's unimpressive overtime victory over Texas. The Tar Heels are picking up just 18.5 first downs per game, the second fewest in the league. Head coach Larry Fedora's seat continues to warm by the week. Carter is averaging 6.4 yards per carry and has the speed and power to transform the Carolina running game.

After today's 59-7 defeat, the Tar Heels are now 1-7 overall and 0-5 in the ACC. Things don't get much easier for UNC next week when the No. 8 Miami Hurricanes come to Chapel Hill. Jackson, whose TD passes are the most ever by a Virginia Tech freshman, needs 141 yards to overtake Michael Vick's freshman record for passing yards (1,840 in 1999) and is looking forward to attacking a defense that is surrendering 31 points and 461 yards per contest.
