Director General of Police (DGP) SP Vaid said these militants were involved in a number of terror attacks in which security forces personnel and civilians were killed. The IAF Garud commandos were operating with the Army for the operational experience.

2 personnel who lost their lives in Bandipora (J&K) encounter were from IAF's Garuda Force & were with Army for operational training.

Police said the joint parties of 13 Rashtriya Rifles, CRPF and the counter-insurgency wing of police cordoned off Pribal Salamabad area of Hajin, around 35 kilometers from here, following inputs on the presence of a group of terrorists.

The identity of militants, suspected to be from Pakistan-based Lashkar-a-Taiba, was yet to be ascertained.

The IAF said two terrorists, firing indiscriminately, ran towards the position of the Garud commandos, who challenged them and killed the two terrorists.

As per the report by the Indian Express, over a dozen top leaders of Hizbul Mujahideen, Lashkar-e-Toiba and JeM have been killed by security forces since January. The operation is still underway, the report said.

As the joint team of forces intensified the searches on wee hours, the hiding militants opened fired, triggering a fierce gunfight between the two sides.
