It's official: Disha Patani to play lead role in 'Sangamitra'

The makers of Sangamithra announced that Disha Patani will be playing the lead role in their film.

Disha took to Twitter to share her excitement about joining the project.

"We are delighted to have Disha Patani play the titular role".

Thenandal doesn't want Sangamithra to hog the limelight now and Sundar C is directing a small-budget comedy kalakalppuu 2, his immediate next project.

The prestigious project was launched earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival and was to star Shruti Haasan as Sangamithra.

Sangamithra's story is set in the 8th century AD, and it will follow Sangamithra's struggles and her inspiring journey to save her kingdom. "Really very excited for #Sangamitra Can't wait to start shooting for this wonderful film...(sic)", she posted on her Twitter account. Hema Rukmani also said in sidelines in Cannes film festival that everyone has shown a lot of interest in the sangamithra.

The film, said to be a Tamil historical drama, will be dubbed in Telugu and Hindi. They chose to not work together as things didn't work out with her effectively. The regular shoot of the film will start this December and Jayam Ravi, Arya will be seen in the other lead roles. Unfortunately, the then heroine, Shruti Haasan dropped out the film which put breaks on Sanghamithra.

Oscar-winning composer A R Rahman will score the Sanghamitra music, while cinematography will be handled by National Award-winning Thirunavukarasu.
