WhatsApp Introduces Live Location Sharing Designed for Short-Term Use

WhatsApp, the Facebook-owned messaging service, is giving its over 1 billion users another reason to keep coming back to the app multiple times a day: live location sharing.

Your location is shared at the chat level, which means you can share your live location in a one-on-one WhatsApp conversation or a group chat.

WhatsApp has announced a new feature that lets you share your Live Location.

WhatsApp says that this latest feature is coming to both Android and iOS and will be rolling out over the "coming weeks".

To use Live Location, you open a chat with a person or group. However, like the static location, live location too will only be visible to the contacts or groups one chooses to share it with. But WhatsApp product manager Zafir Khan says they paid particular attention to the feature's impact on battery life and made several optimizations so that it wouldn't be a huge drain, even if users were sharing location for long periods of time. You can set a timer for how long you want to share your location, and everyone you've chosen to send your location to can see where you are on a map in real time. In the event that you are utilizing WhatsApp Web and somebody imparts a live area to you, you will be demonstrated a placeholder that will show that the live area can be seen on the telephone.

Khan believes the feature will find wide traction among WhatsApp's large user base.

"When we choose to fabricate a component, it needs to tackle an issue that is experienced by finished a billion people".

"All of those things inform how often we get location updates form your device, battery is really critical". And the problem that we are looking at with live location is what you might call the rendezvous problem or the problem of meeting up in the real world.

In a blog post on Tuesday, the makers of the app wrote: "Whether you're meeting up with friends, letting loved ones know you're safe, or sharing your commute, Live Location is a simple and secure way to let people know where you are".
