Amazon Studios to Create Lord of the Rings TV Series

Industry observers have been quick to note that Amazon, like others, is searching for the "next" Game of Thrones as that juggernaut begins to roll to an end.

The new series will reportedly focus on brand new storylines that will likely precede the events portrayed on The Fellowship of the Ring.

Amazon has acquired global television rights to turn J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" into a television series. Amazon says it will bring "The Lord of the Rings" to the small screen.

The Lord of the Rings' rich imagery is a fertile ground where script writers can find the inspiration to deliver enticing new epics based on the Middle Earth universe.

"We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for 'The Lord of the Rings, '" said Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins.

However, the series will not be a retelling of Peter Jackson's Oscar-winning trilogy. "I better see Elijah Wood as Frodo I don't care how old he looks".

The Tolkien estate had approached Amazon, Netflix and HBO with the project asking for an upfront rights payment somewhere in the range of $200 - $250 million and Amazon landed the deal by paying close to $250 million. Astonishingly, that price does not include whatever it will cost to develop and eventually produce however many episodes/seasons are in our future.

Yet Amazon appears to justify its spending on programming as a way to draw new sign-ups to Prime, whose members not only enjoy the video service, but also buy more goods more often from the world's largest online retailer.
