Police say the vehicle hit the wall while going under the 8 Mile overpass. He was examined at a hospital.

Police say the four who were killed are Doreal Rodgers, 20, of Detroit; Alesia Maddox, 20, of Detroit; Armonie Maddox, 18, of Detroit; and Ervin Johnson, 18, of Eastpointe. Rodgers, Alesia Maddox and Armonie Maddox were Detroit residents.

WDIV, the NBC affiliate in Detroit, reports the crash happened around 1 a.m. on eastbound I-94 near 8 Mile Road in St. Clair Shores, northeast of Detroit. The interstate has since reopened to traffic. They were not wearing seatbelts, Shaw said.

Speed and wet weather may have played a role in this deadly crash, but it remains under investigation.

The adults all were between 18 and 25 years old.

State police say a vehicle accident recreation unit is researching.

The accident closed down a portion of eastbound I-94 for roughly six hours Monday morning.

"Every couple weeks there are sirens going down there. It always seems it's either right before the bridge over here, or right here", she said.

Police told 10News' sister station in Detroit, WXYZ, a Buick SUV carrying five people was found mangled and crushed on the right embankment of the highway.

First responders found two males ejected from the auto and two females inside when they arrived at the scene of the wreck on a slick portion of the I-94 near 8 Mile Road in Harper Woods, in southeastern Detroit.
