Collectively, the performance work being done to modernize Firefox is called Project Quantum. But with this Firefox Quantum update, Google will now be the default search provider for everyone in the United States and Canada - unless the end user changes said default, that is. This timeframe's work includes a "completely overhauled core engine" and "brand new technology stolen from [Mozilla's] advanced research group".

Mozilla also made some improvements in the functionality of algorithms within the browser as Firefox now allows users to make payments in an easier manner, while virtual reality has also improved under the browser, as well as WebAssembly-powered games.
Chrome, meanwhile, is said to outstrip Quantum on sites including Google Docs, Instagram, BBC and Lifehacker. This lower memory footprint is most noticeable when opening multiple tabs (which all of us frequently do), as users won't see a drag on performance or crippling memory and CPU usage that can often cripple Chrome. The site for the new version also touts the updated browser's aggressive tracking protection and built-in ad- and script-blocking features. "No other browser can do this", Mozilla claims.
You can check out Mozilla's tests here and technical background here. According to Mozilla, Firefox quantum is roughly twice as fast as Firefox 52 from six months ago. "In fact, nearly 75% of the Firefox code was impacted all to give you a browser that is fast, intuitive and modern on all of your devices". "You guessed it: the Photon UI itself is incredibly fast and smooth". Firefox should now make better used of multi-threading and GPU acceleration where applicable, and should use significantly less memory. If you use Quantum on a Windows PC with a touch display, the menus change size based on whether you click with a mouse or touch with a finger. Firefox 57 also includes an inbuilt tool to take screenshots.
