Police arrested five people at Charlton Memorial Hospital following a disturbance

According to authorities, officers responded to the intersection of Riggenbach and Airport Road following a report that a vehicle was smoking.

They did not provide any additional details on the record about what took place before the shots were fired, and only said that their loved one died in an officer-involved shooting.

Details are emerging on both the officer-involved shooting and a series of arrests at the Charlton Memorial Hospital.

Police have not provided a comment on those claims, either.

Over phone, police say the caller described seeing a smoking green hatchback vehicle and hearing "two loud bangs" that sounded like gunshots. Fall River Police say the shooting and arrests are related. The caller was unsure if it was a crash or a fight.

Friends and relatives of a 19-year-old man say he was shot and later died from his injuries. He was held without bail in an open case out of New Bedford yesterday in Fall River District Court, while the four other family members were released on their own recognizance, court officials said. Police said 10 to 15 of Ruiz-Barreto's family members had gathered at the hospital waiting to hear of his status and were being disruptive.
