South Korea's Unification Ministry have called for North Korea to participate at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics in an effort to foster peace. Reflecting the special circumstances of the Korean Peninsula - namely, continuing concerns about a military clash - the Olympic Truce resolution calls for "safe passage, access and participation for athletes and relevant persons at the Games". The main thrust of the resolution is the proposal to temporarily halt conflicts all over the world during the Pyeongchang Olympic Games (Feb. 9-25, 2018) and the Paralympic Winter Games (Mar. 9-18, 2018), with the truce starting seven days before the opening ceremony and ending seven days after the closing ceremony.

"Through this cease-fire resolution, United Nations member states will have a meaningful opportunity to promote peace in the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games through sports and Olympic ideals, promote understanding of humanity, and create peace on the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia", a Ministry statement read, according to fnnews.

The resolution, drafted by the Korean government, also includes how the PyeongChang Olympics will serve as a golden opportunity for promoting peace in Northeast Asia as the first among the three major sports events in the coming years in the region.

In a speech before the assembly, Kim Yu-na, a former South Korean figure skating champion and honorary ambassador to the PyeongChang games, touted the Olympic spirit. "The Olympic Charter states the goal of Olympism is to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of humankind with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity", she said. "I strongly believe this is the spirit of the Olympic Games and it represents the potential and the power of sport".

South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-yo has assured this year's Olympics will be a success.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have cast a shadow over the upcoming Winter Olympics, especially with President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un trading barbs in recent months.

The 2017 Winter Games are scheduled to take place February 9 to February 25.

"Indeed, Pyeongchang represents perhaps the most honest efforts to cross frozen borders between South and North Korea and foster a peaceful environment", she said. The Paralympics are to follow in mid-March.

The symbolic Olympic Truce resolution has been adopted every two years ahead of the summer and winter games since 1993.

The resolution noted "possibilities of new partnership in sport and beyond for Republic of Korea, Japan and China".

Lee Hee Beom, president of the South Korean organizing committee, said the resolution signifies the General Assembly's "strong wish that Pyeongchang will provide the window of opportunity to foster an environment conducive to building and sustaining peace on the Korean peninsula, and in northeast Asia".

While in the US, the minister will be engaged in a slew of promotional activities for the Olympics.

It was updated by the International Olympic Committee in 1992 before they set up the international organisation Olympic Truce in 2000 to honour the tradition.

The Ministry of Unification said on the adoption of the resolution, "We look forward to North Korea being receptive in creating a path to peace on the Korean Peninsula, Northeast Asia and the worldwide community".
