The American Heart Association is calling on the public to knit and crochet red hats for babies. Hundreds of volunteers knitted or crocheted 90,000 tiny caps in a recent year for the project, dubbed "Little Hats, Big Hearts".

Donated hats should be made with yarns that are red, cotton or acrylic, medium to heavy weight, machine washable and dryable. The project has grown to include 660 hospitals in 40 states handing out more than 100,000 hats.
The Little Hats, Big Hearts project began in February 2014 in Chicago and collected 300 hats.
It's part of their "Little Hats, Big Hearts" program to encourage moms to live healthy lives and help guide their children to do the same.
