During a Monday taping of CBS' The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Bush, who was with Trump on a bus in 2005 when he uttered crude comments about being able to grope women, rejected any effort by the president to say it wasn't him speaking, as The New York Times reported last week.
The op-ed, published on December 3, was in direct response to Trump's recent assertion that the voice on the now-infamous Access Hollywood tape "was not authentic" and that the "locker room talk" was doctored. "He was the big star of NBC and I sort of equated what he was saying to some kind of crass standup act". At times, the 12-minute interview was awkward and uncomfortable as even now Bush still grappled with describing the tape and its aftermath.
"The first time I ever heard it was about three days before it leaked ... and so it was like a gut punch ... and it's a gut punch now ... it will always be", Bush said. "He told Colbert he was offended by Trump's denial on a personal level, and also on behalf of the women who have gone on the record to accuse Trump of sexual misconduct".
"I think it's clear that it is" Trump's voice, Bossie said.
In an op-ed article Sunday night on the Times" website, Bush - to whom Trump made the remarks - wrote: "He said it. "Grab 'em by the pussy.' Of course he said it". So when he said this, it infuriated me on the personal front, and then I ended up Googling and I read an article with all of these women's accounts. Enough's enough. Stop playing around with people's lives!' That upset me.
Bush added that he was with Mr. Trump "all the time" because "The Apprentice" was doing so well.
He did play a recording of the tape for Bush, who said that it's still a "gut punch" now to hear himself react the way he did to Trump's words in 2005.
Bush said he was confused as well. Ideally, he said, it will expand to include questions like "how do you talk to boys in peewee hockey locker rooms and teach them that when the conversation gets degrading, how do you either exit the conversation, change the topic, or intervene in some way?"
"He's got his hand up and I'm going into my little cabin to do the work", Bush recalled with incredulity. "I hope that we do get there, because I've spent a lot of time thinking about it". "He told me that he went privately to the bosses", he recalled. Back in October 2016, Bush was sacked from his position at the Today show as a result of the aforementioned tape, in which Bush laughed as Trump detailed the way in which he could supposedly force himself upon women.
"The bus ride was the tip of the iceberg", Bush said.
