China has been critical of USA exercises with South Korea and Japan, which it believes are basically unhelpful for resolving the situation on the Korean Peninsula, and the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged related countries to avoid provoking each other.
A South Korean defence ministry official was unable to verify the Yonhap report immediately.
The drills follow reports last week that North Korea had successfully conducted another ballistic missile launch across Japan as the country continues to pursue its nuclear ambitions, as it continues to threaten both the US and South Korea with wholesale nuclear destruction. Chinese Air Force spokesperson Shen Jinke appeared on China Central Television (CCTV) on December 5 to say that the Chinese Air Force had conducted drills in the Yellow Sea (known in South Korea as the West Sea) and in the East China Sea.
The US and South Korea, which are opposed to the North Korean missile and nuclear programs, however, claim the drills have a "defensive nature". After each American military exercise with South Korea or Japan in recent months, China has announced its own drills in neighboring areas.
