Boyle, who appeared alert and aware in his appearance before the court in an orange jumpsuit from the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Facility, will remain in police custody for the time being and while it had been expected his mother would appear before the court today, that did not happen.
I suspect Boyle was going there to join the Taliban. Boyle has told the press that his children were born and raised in captivity.
When arrested, Boyle lived in a downtown Ottawa apartment with his family. Weeks later, in mid-December, the family met with Justin Trudeau in his office and tweeted photos of the occasion, which show the prime minister holding one of their kids. Boyle is also accused of forcing someone to take a "noxious substance", namely the antidepressant Trazodone, and misleading police.
They returned to intense media attention that began with Boyle giving interviews at the airport.
A publication ban prevents identifying the alleged victims or any witnesses. The Pakistanis caught the Haqqani fighters at some point after they had moved with their captives across the border from Afghanistan. The next hearing was set for January 8. Mr Boyle and his wife Caitlin Coleman were kidnapped in October 2012 while backpacking in Afghanistan.
Boyle, 34, is facing eight counts of assault, two counts of sexual assault and two counts of unlawful confinement.
Despite the length of their captivity, no ransom was ever demanded by their kidnappers.
When asked by ABC News following his rescue why he was in Afghanistan, Boyle refused to answer. The Taliban denied the accusations of rape and murder.
"Yes", the judge replied, and Boyle walked off screen.
They had begun their tourist trek through Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan about a year after getting married in Costa Rica. No family members of Boyle or his wife attended.

On Wednesday, a government spokesman said the meeting was at the request of the Boyles and that Trudeau is willing to meet with any Canadian who has gone through such harrowing circumstances.
