IED detected near Srinagar, bomb disposal unit reaches spot

Security forces on Saturday recovered an improvised explosive device (IED) on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway, police said. Sniffer dogs were also pressed into service.

He said a group of youth took to streets and started pelting stones on the security forces in the area where an IED was detected and defused earlier this morning.

A Bomb disposal squad defused the IED around 11 am without causing any damage, following which traffic movement was restored on the highway.

On January 6, four policemen were killed in an IED blast in Sopore township of north Kashmir. "When it failed to stop, army men opened fire in which two persons were injured". Officials said both were stable, adding that the vehicle did not stop at the checking point when it was asked to stop by Armymen. "If it would have been a (land) mine, how a person could have lifted it?" he said.

SSP Srinagar City Imtiaz Ismail Parray said that a case has been registered and further investigations are going on.
