Liam Livingstone called-up in England Test squad for New Zealand tour

Much greater challenges than the one in Sydney's inner-west suburbs lie ahead over five one-day internationals against Australia but the influx of white-ball specialists at least served to alter the mood following the 4-0 Test series defeat.

"We've got to go to New Zealand and take what we've learned from here and try and be better in that series". Stokes missed the series after being banned from global duties as police investigate his alleged role in a brawl outside a Bristol nightclub in September 2017. However, his participation remains subject to "disciplinary developments" in relation to the three-month old Bristol incident.

All-rounder Ben Stokes has also been included in the squad but his participation will depend on the outcome of the case following his involvement in an incident outside a Bristol nightclub in September past year.

England squad for New Zealand tour: Joe Root (c), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Stuart Broad, Alastair Cook, Mason Crane, Ben Foakes, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Craig Overton, Ben Stokes, Mark Stoneman, James Vince, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.

The Nottinghamshire batsman was cleared of any wrongdoing in December but may still be punished by the England & Wales Cricket Board once Stokes discovers whether he will be charged for ABH.

Livingstone's displays for Lancashire over the past two seasons, as well as his efforts for the Lions when touring Sri Lanka and against South Africa A at home, caught the eye of the selectors.

Matt Prior, the former England wicketkeeper, has castigated county cricket for housing too many complacent cricketers without the ambition to succeed for England.

National selector James Whitaker said Livingstone, who averages 48.75 in first-class cricket, had been a "standout performer" in the recent Lions tour of Australia.

Batsman Gary Ballance and fast-bowlers Jake Ball and Tom Curran have been dropped after being part of the Ashes squad.

Four times he cleared the boundary at Drummoyne Oval - an uppercut plus two hooks off Mark Wood followed by a cover drive off Plunkett - in a 39-ball 50.

"He is a very talented and tough cricketer who has the ideal qualities and character to be successful in the Test arena". He was ruled out of the Ashes tour because of an ankle injury although he travelled with the squad for the last few weeks as he built back up to full fitness.
