Lindsey Graham thought he had Trump tamed - but got played instead

He initially released a joint statement with Perdue that said he could not recall whether the president used the word "shithole".

It would be legally or morally impermissible to allow TPS holders from other countries to get green cards, but not Haitians, just because the president said he didn't want "more" Haitians (never mind that the people who'd get green cards are, by definition, already living in the US). "It was a meeting of 12 people".

"I don't dispute that the president was using tough language".

As an immigration reporter, one of the things I struggle most with is making it clear that there are arguments for restrictions on immigration that are not necessarily motivated by racial animus, while acknowledging that, often, it's impossible to tell where one ends and the other begins. She said: "Why did NBC give him a show for a decade on TV".

So it came as something of a surprise to his fellow lawmakers when Graham became one of the president's best golf buddies, offering effusive praise for Trump's backswing and golf properties.

Members of Congress (most notably Lindsey Graham and Dick Durbin, who negotiated the deal Trump panned in Thursday's meeting) took Trump at his word and attempted to address his stated concerns.

Trump stands accused of using "shithole" to describe African countries during an immigration meeting with a bipartisan group of six senators. Somehow they rationalize that what Trump said was bad and racist but that covering it up is not.

Cotton told CBS' "Face the Nation" that he "didn't hear" the word used - "and I was sitting no further away from Donald Trump than Dick Durbin was".

Perdue was one of several lawmakers participating in a meeting with Trump last week when the president reportedly referred to immigrants from African nations, El Salvador and Haiti as coming from "shithole countries".

Petroleo Brasileiro SA - Petrobras (NYSE: PBR-A)
T2 Biosystems, Inc. (TTOO) exchanged hands at an unexpectedly low level of 0.23 million shares over the course of the day. Analysts believe that the company has the potential to earn average revenue of $24.08 Billion for the current quarter.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders maintained Trump is in charge of the talks.

Since then, the sniping over Trump's remark has overwhelmed the DACA debate. Trump wasn't apologetic and denied he was racist, instead blaming the media for distorting his meaning, said the confidant, who wasn't authorized to disclose a private conversation and spoke on condition of anonymity. It accepts as a premise that people who come to America from certain places "don't assimilate", and concludes that there are some groups of people who can not ever be fully American.

It protects young immigrants - known as "Dreamers" - brought into the United States illegally by their parents from deportation. "I've always believed that America is an idea, not defined by its people but by its ideals", Graham said.

Graham played golf with his president, he complimented him on his swing, he flattered his intelligence and he even agreed to throw some red meat at the base on Trump's behalf by taking up the ridiculous crusade to jail Hillary Clinton.

PERDUE: I'm saying that this is a gross misrepresentation, it's not the first time Senator Durbin has done it, and it is not productive to solving the problem that we have at hand. The president and all those attending the meeting know what I said and how I feel.

This is apparently all the difference that they needed to issue their statement, which assured that "we do not recall the president saying these comments specifically".

Booker says the words attributed to Trump cast a shadow over millions of Americans from those countries.

As the firestorm over Trump's comment began late last week, the White House and Trump's National Security Council provided no guidance to the State Department about what to say to foreign countries who were incensed, said a USA official familiar with the conversations between the White House and other federal agencies.
