About 9:48 p.m. Thursday night, January 11, Ceres officers were dispatched on a report of a woman shot inside a home, according to police. His 68-year-old mother Lydia came up to check on him and an argument erupted. She was taken to an area hospital for treatment but later succumbed to her injuries.
Investigators believe the woman's son, 28-year-old Matthew Nicholson, was in his bedroom playing video games and apparently got upset and started yelling. During the argument, Nicholson broke his own headset while yelling at his mother, according to police.
When the victim went to check on Nicholson, the pair began to argue. Officers found the vehicle there, conducted a high-risk traffic stop and took Nicholson into custody.
He then allegedly grabbed a gun, fired two shots into a wall, then shot his mother before his 81-year-old father wrestled away the weapon. Their son Matthew Nicholson threatened to kill them both over a broken video game headset, police said.
Nicholson drove off to a relative's home but was stopped in the town of Riverbank, just north of Ceres. A long-time friend of the family elaborated, telling FOX40, "I understand that he would've killed the father too, but the gun jammed".
