Wasghington Examiner: Nikki Haley announces $285 million cut to United Nations budget

Earlier in June, the U.N. General Assembly voted to cut US$600 million from the organization's almost US$8 billion annual peacekeeping budget, thanks to Trump's pressure.

Guterres' budget proposal was $200 million below the 2016-17 biennial budget.

The U.N.'s operating budget covers a two-year period beginning each even-numbered year. Wealthier countries that pay the lion's share of the budget - the U.S., Japan, Canada and European Union members - routinely push for the budget to be lowered. Haley, who previously served as the governor of SC, said upon her nomination as the United States envoy that she would question whether USA funding for the UN is justified. United Nations watchers predict an overwhelming majority of member states will approve a symbolic resolution expressing displeasure at America's decision to relocate its embassy in Israel. Without the USA and its aid, there is no United Nations. "The US fights hard, together with other countries, every year to cut United Nations budget & regularly does". It was about American values, the coincidence of American values with the United States' support of Israel, and a reassessment of the United States' role in the U.N.

The General Assembly's overwhelming rebuke of the Trump administration came just a day after Haley warned in a Facebook post that "yes, the us will be taking names" during the vote. "When that happens, our participation in the United Nations produces great good for the world".

On Dec. 21, as President Trump prepared to leave Washington for Christmas at Mar-a-Lago, the White House released a list of "81 major accomplishments" during the President's first year in office. In a similar tone, speaking before the UN General Assembly vote, United States ambassador to UN Nikki Haley said: "When a nation is singled out for attack in this organization, that nation is disrespected".

He added that the good Americans are exhausted of being taken advantage of, "well, we're not going to be taken advantage of any longer".

Lebanese Prime Minister Steps In to Overrule Ban on 'The Post'
The matter has now been transferred to Lebanon's Minister of Interior and Municipalities, who could still overturn the decision. Previous year they banned " Wonder Woman " actress Gal Gadot, who is from Israel and also served in the Israeli military.

She also said that while the mission was pleased with the results of budget negotiations, it would continue to "look at ways to increase the UN's efficiency while protecting our interests".

The United States remains by far the largest payee to the UN, contributing 22 percent of the core budget. "When the American people see a group of countries whose total contributions to the Palestinian people is less than 1 percent of UNRWA's budget - when they see these countries accuse the United States of being insufficiently committed to peace - the American people lose their patience".

The vote at United Nations General Assembly against the U.S. move on December 21 was a strong denouncement of the United States' policies, especially in the Middle East, both by its adversaries and allies. In the wake of the vote the U.S. ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley expressed gratitude thanked the countries who voted against the UN resolution or abstained from voting.

Peters called the UN's 128-9 vote that rejects the US decision on Jerusalem as insignificant and said the government made a misstep in its threat to cut off funding to nations that oppose Trump's decision.

"Let them vote against us", Trump said at a Cabinet meeting before the vote, The Guardian reports. Let them vote against us, we'll save a lot. "We don't care. But this isn't like it used to be where they could vote against you and then you pay them hundreds of millions of dollars and nobody knows what they're doing". However, Jerusalem has never been internationally recognized as the capital of Israel and it is the reason all countries have their embassies in Tel Aviv. Today, we acknowledge that Jerusalem is the Israeli capital. Trump won't win respect through threats or taunts or a policy of vote-buying at the United Nations.

Despite strong response to the US move in General Assembly and UNSC, US succeeded in making some important nations like Canada, Mexico, Australia, and Philippines abstain from voting.
