'Window closing' to find survivors in USA mudslide

"We were expecting rain this week and usually were grateful for rain, especially in California, but not after the largest fire in the history of California". It's a tight-knit community so everyone kind of knows everyone. "You hear the word mudslides and you have no idea the impact that it has".

Brown did say that of the 17 people he announced were missing Wednesday, some were identified as among the dead and were crossed off the list. After a better look at the damage, officials lowered the number of destroyed homes from 100 to 64 and raised the number of damaged ones from 300 to 462.

The death toll from the mudslides that struck Southern California stood at 15 with rescue crews continuing their search for anyone trapped, injured or dead in the onslaught.

The mudslides were part of an evolving natural disaster.

"The house in the back is gone", she says, gesturing around her. "It was literally a carpet of mud and debris everywhere with huge boulders, rocks, downed trees, powerlines, wrecked cars, lots of obstacles and challenges for rescue personnel to get to homes let alone to get people out of them", he said.

Eighteen people have died as a result of the disaster in the wealthy enclave of Montecito, a community about 90 miles up the coast from Los Angeles.

In a statement to KSBY-6 News, Cottage Health said, "We're very saddened by the death of Dr. Mark Montgomery, who was a member of the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Medical Staff. Dr. Montgomery was a respected orthopedic surgeon who specialized in hand surgery".

Authorities are hoped to find them alive.

When Winfrey called into DeGeneres' show, she described a tragic scene from her back yard.

"All of my neighbors' homes are gutted..." The host opened her show talking to the audience about the devastation before she FaceTimed Winfrey, who lives in the same Santa Barbara County area as DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi. We're going to come together and we're going to do what great Americans do all the time. She also assured that she feels "safe" despite the circumstances. "What a day!" so she captioned the post.
