As she was on stage to present the victor alongside another male director, Ron Howard, Portman introduced the "all-male nominees" to gasps and shocked laughter from the audience. Gal Gadot is an idol to little girls everywhere as Wonder Woman, and Patty Jenkins became the first female director of a summer blockbuster success.

"There's also a watershed happening right now, slowly, maybe not fast enough, for women directors", Spielberg told Entertainment Tonight. "You know, that was 1984".

"I think it was great!" he wrote.

In the now viral moment, Portman introduces the "all-male nominees", exacting gasps of disbelief from the crowd at the Beverly Hilton, as well as the millions watching from home.

The award for best director followed Oprah's captivating speech after winning the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement which has all of Hollywood hoping she'll run for president.

While the room filled with chatter and Howard appeared slightly shocked, Twitter was busy having a field day with Portman's surprising comment.

Particularly when their films are being celebrated in every other way, so I thought it was interesting to highlight it. As she announced the nominees for the category, she uttered a blunt and factually accurate qualifier.
