President Donald Trump has taken to Twitter on multiple occasions since Nicolas Cruz murdered 17 people at the Parkland school from which he was expelled.

In a tweet, President Trump said, "My prayers and condolences to the families of the victims of the bad Florida shooting".

Southwest Florida school districts will see an increase in security following the Parkland school shooting on Wednesday.

Trump's comments appeared to contradict his decision last February to make it easier for people with mental illnesses to buy guns.

The shooter identified as Nikolas Cruz carried out the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida's Parkland, the school where was expelled before for disciplinary actions.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office is also expected to hold a news conference with updates about the case at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

At least one student recognized Cruz from an Instagram photo in which he posed with a gun in front of his face, according to CBS News.

Seventeen people were killed, including an athletic coach who reportedly shielded students from the bullets. A blogger who submitted a tip said it was Cruz.

School remains closed for the remainder of the week, but school counselors will be on site for students and faculty as investigation continues.

Such an exercise had forced them to leave their classrooms hours earlier.

Senator Marco Rubio called Cruz "deeply disturbed", citing troubling social-media posts, the recent death of Lynda Cruz, past referrals to authorities and "things not made public" by authorities. That tally includes suicides and incidents when no one was injured, as well as the January shooting in which a 15-year-old gunman killed two fellow students at a Benton, Kentucky, high school.
