Activists lineup thousands of children's shoes outside US Capitol lawn

7000 pairs of shoes on Capitol lawn to represent children lost to gun violence since Sandy Hook

There are 7000 pairs of shoes outside the Capitol. Here's why.

A temporary memorial at the U.S. Capitol displays a pair of empty shoes to illustrate the 7,000 children killed by guns since the December 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

Several mass shootings have occurred since Sandy Hook, including the October 1 tragedy in Las Vegas, a church shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas, and another school shooting last month in Parkland, Florida.

Students across the country will walk out of their classrooms for 17 minutes to commemorate the 17 victims who lost their lives in the February 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

The organization also said that some celebrities donated shoes as well, including Chelsea Handler, Alyssa Milano, Bette Midler, and Susan Sarandon.

The event mirrors a similar display the group put on following the 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris ahead of the Global Climate Summit.

Traders of US short-term interest-rate futures kept bets the Federal Reserve will stick to three rate hikes this year. The Canadian dollar closed at 77.94 cents U.S. , up 0.06 of a United States cent.

The massacre was the deadliest school shooting since 20 children and six adults were shot dead at Sandy Hook more than five years ago.

CBS affiliate WUSA reports that the group based the protest on research from the American Academy of Pediatrics that found approximately 1,300 children are killed by guns each year, or about three every day.

Gun control advocates and students seized on the most recent school shooting to call on Congress to take up legislation to tighten background checks and restrict access to certain weapons. @Avaaz says it represents the number of children who died bc of gun violence.

Organizers of the memorial said the Parkland shooting was the catalyst for creating the memorial.

The silent protest is meant to spur lawmakers to take action on gun reforms.
