Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, Patel and state party president Jitu Vaghani, who is also an MLA, held a meeting. Harnath Singh Yadav, a former MLC, too came from the SP (in 2007); his Yadav community is a strong support base of the SP. The BJP had earlier announced the name of Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

Lt General DP Vats, Rajeev Chandrasekhar and Sameer Uranv are contesting from Haryana, Karnataka and Jharkhand respectively. Mr. Pradhan is a sitting Rajya Sabha member from Bihar.

Six candidates filed papers for five Rajya Sabha seats from West Bengal in Kolkata. NDA is set to get a big surge in the upper house when votes are counted. "With Patangrao Kadam's recent demise, Congress's strength has been reduced from 42 to 41and its two MLAs Nitesh Rane and Kalidas Kolmbkar are considered to be Rane loyalists so it is likely they might not vote in favour of the Congress".

Accompanied by senior leaders and legislators of the party, four Trinamool candidates Md Nadimul Haque, Shanatnu Sen, Abir Ranjan Biswas and Subhasish Chakraborty filed their papers.

Former Rajya Sabha member Dhiraj Prasad Sahu was nominated as Congress candidate from Jharkhand. The Congress has little chance of getting its nominee elected from Telangana.

The Congress has named Babu Prasad as the UDF opposition candidate from Kerala. Chandrasekhar will win only if he manages to get a section of JD (S) votes.

However, state Congress President Bharatsinh Solanki said both Yagnik and Rathwa would win their seats. Stalwarts like former union minister Sushilkumar Shinde, Milind Deora and Rajiv Shukla were in race.

In Gujarat, the Congress list has created division among leaders.
