Defence counsels Dayan Krishnan and Mohit Mathur told the court that Karti Chidambaram's father has dealt with various stringent penal laws such as TADA, MCOCA, Unlawful (Activities) Prevention Act and NDPS Act.
However, the court directed the lock-up in-charge and jail superintendent of Tihar Jail to provide and ensure proper safety and security to accused during the judicial custody as per rules.
Karti Chidambaram was produced before Delhi's Patiala House Court on Monday after his three-day CBI custody ended.
Meanwhile, Karti will now have to wait for his bail plea to be heard, which has been slated for March 15, to get any reprieve.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Karti, said even he has been subjected to abuses and threats on the twitter for which there has been often no recourse.
Australia itching to avenge World Cup semi-final loss to India
The hosts were off to a steady start with openers, Punam Raut (37) and Mandhana, putting on 38 runs in nine overs. Indian pacer Shikha Pandey claimed a wicket while Australian spinner finished with a four-wicket haul.
Opposing the security application, the CBI argued that while there may be a threat to P Chidambaram, no threat lies to Karti or his family members, as they continue to travel around the country at free will. "He [Karti Chidambaram] can not be treated different from other accused persons and can not be allowed to be kept in separate prison", the court said.
Karti's counsel said, "this gives further proof to my apprehension". I'm shocked that CBI can oppose my plea for security. The court dismissed Karti's plea for early hearing of his bail application.
The court also rejected Karti Chidambaram's plea seeking allotment of a separate prison in Tihar Jail saying that in view of social status of the accused and his father, he can not be treated different from the other accused.
Special CBI judge Sunil Rana allowed Karti, who was arrested in the INX Media case, to carry his medicines, after the jail doctor clears it, and his spectacles, while rejecting his plea to have home food, toiletries and books. "We filed a caveat before the SC that in case ED is going to file an appeal, they'll have to intimate us". The son of the former finance minister has been in custody since his arrest on February 28 in the INX Media corruption case where he is alleged to have used the office of his father, then finance minister, to favour INX Media in getting FIPB clearances. In May 2017, the ED registered a money laundering case against Karti for allegedly facilitating Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance for INX Media Ltd and Peter and Indrani Mukerjea when his father was the finance minister in the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. It, however, later revised the figure to $1 million (about Rs 6.50 crore at the current exchange rate and Rs 4.50 crore in 2007).
