UMBC routs UVA in historic upset

The 2018 NCAA tournament features No. 1 overall seed Virginia playing No. 16 seed Maryland-Baltimore County Friday night in the South regional in Charlotte, N.C.

The specific talking point will be the postseason viability of the "Packline defense" of UVA's Head Coach Tony Bennet which includes constant high traps, steals, and blocking of rim access, some would argue at the cost of a more explosive offense.

No. 1 seeds came into the game 135-0 all-time against No. 16 seeds in the tournament.

UMBC is a surprise entry into the NCAA Tournament field, after knocking off perennial tournament darling Vermont in the America East Tournament final on a stunning buzzer-beater from senior Jairus Lyles. Given that Bennet has never been beyond the Elite Eight with UVA in the NCAA tournament despite winning more than 70 percent of his games with the Cavaliers, particularly disgruntled fans may begin calling for him to be sacked. Sophomores Kyle Guy and Ty Jerome scored 15 points apiece for Virginia.

UMBC now plays Kansas State in the next round on Sunday. The Retrievers lost to No. 2-seeded Georgetown 66-47 in 2008 in their only other tournament appearance. Dave Odom was an assistant on then-Virginia men's basketball coach Terry Holland's staff from 1982 through '89, and Ryan served as a ballboy while growing up in Charlottesville, a short walk from University Hall. The Retrievers won 20 games this season for just the fourth time in school history. The 74 points ended up being the most that defensive-minded Virginia had allowed this year.

That quickly turned to discouragement when news broke Tuesday night that ACC Sixth Man of the Year and breakout freshman De'Andre Hunter boke his wrist in the ACC Tournament.

DEFENSE: Virginia has the country's best defense, surrendering just 53.4 points per game.
