The riot resulted in the deaths of seven inmates and the injury of 17 others at the maximum-security prison.

Of South Carolina's nine all-male, maximum-security prisons, Lee Correctional Institution is the largest. Aid was received from Florence County EMS, Kershaw County EMS, Darlington County EMS, Lexington County EMS and Hartsville Rescue.

According to tweets from the Department of Corrections, all staff and responding law enforcement are safe and accounted for.

"It's not a SC problem, it is a national problem", Stirling said.

However, if McCain resigns after May, then the appointed senator would serve through the 2020 elections. McCain suffered an intestinal infection that required surgery, according to his congressional office.

The prison, which opened 25 years ago and holds about 1,300 of some of South Carolina's most violent offenders, is no stranger to violence.

Two officers were stabbed there in a 2015 fight.

Authorities responded to an "ongoing incident" at Lee Correctional Facility in Bishopville, S.C.

In February, an inmate was killed by another inmate in a fight.
