Saudi Arabia, which takes over the rotating chair of the Arab summit from Jordan, announced that this gathering would be named the "Quds (Jerusalem) Summit", a reference to US President Donald Trump's decision a year ago to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, which Arab states condemned.

The summit begins on Sunday in the East coast city of Dammam.

The ministers also stressed the importance of building relations with Iran based on the principle of good neighborliness and the rejection of force or threat, condemning Iranian meddling in the internal affairs of Arab states.

Saudi Arabia's push for a tough stand against its arch-rival Iran will also dominate the summit as regional tensions grow over the wars in Syria and Yemen.

"We extend our support to the Palestinians' right to establish their homeland based on the 1967 lines with the capital city Jerusalem, as stated in the global resolutions and Arab peace initiative", said Al-Jubeir during his speech at foreign ministers' preparatory meeting on Friday.

Opening the 29th Arab League summit, the king criticised the United States decision to transfer its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem and described "terrorism" as the biggest challenge facing Arab leaders.

The administration of Trump has recognised Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel and declared to the USA embassy to be located in Jerusalem.

The Qatari delegation is being headed by Doha's permanent representative to the Arab League, Saif bin Muqaddam al-Buainain, Qatar's state news agency said, without elaborating.

A witness told the news station that police told him to put his hands up and when he got out of his vehicle, the officers opened fire.

The image has slowly gained traction online and on social media by Arab users who said the image showed solidarity among Arab leadership.

"We reiterate our rejection of the United States decision on Jerusalem", Salman said.

Dhahran, Apr. 16 (BNA): King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud's decision to rename the 29th Arab Summit as the "Jerusalem Summit" hailed step by all participants, said the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), hailing Riyadh's donations to Palestinians.

Arab ministers at a preliminary meeting in Riyadh on Thursday focused heavily on blocking the embassy move, unanimously condemning Trump's decision.

Earlier this month, the monarch reiterated the kingdom's "steadfast stance on the Palestinian issue and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people to an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital". Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court for five counts of crimes against humanity, three counts of genocide and two counts of war crimes.

Moreover, Qassemi called on the Arab League member states to take necessary measures to build confidence and promote stability in the region.

There was little mention of Syria, whose president Bashar al Assad was not invited to the summit.
