Flipkart eyes 40% share of India's phone market

At its BigOnFlipkart event held today, Flipkart and Asus have partnered to launch the Zenfone Max Pro exclusively on the e-commerce platform.

Coming to the specs of the upcoming Zenfone Max Pro, the company said that the phone will be a game-changer and disruptive, but it did not reveal other specs of the smartphone. According to the company, in 2017, one in four smartphones sold in India across retail channels was via Flipkart. Not a lot is known about its hardware for now.

ASUS said that the ZenFone Max Pro will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 636 SoC, however, the company didn't reveal any other details of this smartphone like amount of RAM, storage, camera configuration, display size or battery capacity. This will also be the global unveiling of the ZenFone Max Pro model and the event will be streamed live on Flipkart.com. Apart from Zenfone Max Pro, the smartphone maker has also confirmed that the Zenfone 5 series is also coming to India soon, but it did not share any specific time-frame for the launch.

Interestingly, Amazon is also eyeing Flipkart and is considering buying a majority stake in its biggest rival in India. In the process, it "wants to add the next 100 million smartphone users by 2020 to the current 330 million base". "With this partnership with Asus, we're multiplying those efforts by collaborating to leverage our individual strengths - data-driven research & insights, and technological prowess - to build smartphones truly customised for India", Flipkart CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy said.

Commenting on the development, ASUS CEO Jerry Shen disclosed that the company has visualized tremendous opportunity in the creation of products and services that is created to address India's market needs. Under this partnership, both companies will collaborate in the co-creation of new products for the Indian market based on consumer insights.

Well, ASUS and Flipkart have signed an exclusive partnership for a period of three years, and as a part of this partnership, the companies plan to bring in "innovative smartphones in every price range" for Indian consumers.
