Killed in Attempted Prison Escape at Brazil

At least 23 people have been killed in Brazil, when prisoners attempted to escape from a correctional facility, local authorities said.

It wasn't immediately clear how numerous dead were inmates and how many were gunmen trying to help them escape.

Heavy gunfight erupted at the Santa Izabel Prison Complex outside Para's state captial when the inmates and their supporters tried to stage the mass escape.

The statement added: "The attempt was supported by an extremely heavily armed group".

Five guards were injured, including one seriously.

Previous year 56 people were killed in an uprising in a prison in the city of Manaus in Brazil's Amazon region.

In January of this year, fighting between gangs at a prison in the northeastern state of Ceara left 10 people dead. That bloodshed took place in the Itapaje Public Prison, about 125 kilometers from the state capital, Fortaleza.

A few days earlier, at least 14 people had been gunned down at a nightclub in Fortaleza.

Lula Da Silva is the most important victim of the so-called Operation "Lava Jato" or "carwash", carried out by the Brazilian Federal Police since 2014, investigating a suspicious money laundering structure that would have managed to move around 3 billion dollars.

The situation in neighbouring Brazil is most interesting. One guard was also killed.
