Why the Summit of the Americas is better off without Trump

Summit host Peru played down the decision by US President Donald Trump to skip the Summit of the Americas, saying Mike Pence was an acceptable substitution, on April 12, 2018.

He will then head to the Amazonian city of Manaus to visit environmental projects funded by the United States, the source added.

The latest faux pas came from the White House ahead of Vice President Mike Pence's trip to Peru to attend the Summit of the Americas.

In a new diplomatic blunder for the Trump administration, Pence's office published a schedule for his trip on Thursday that mistakenly said he would dine with Peru's disgraced former leader Kuczynski instead of Vizcarra.

The theme of the gathering is combatting corruption.

Pence introduced that the USA would supply practically $16 million in humanitarian help to Venezuelans who've fled their nation and met with opposition leaders who pleaded for extra sanctions.

"We agree to unequivocally reject the presence in Lima, within the framework of the 8th Summit of the Americas Civil Society Forum's preparatory process, of citizens of Cuban origin, and mercenary organizations, at the service of foreign governments and institutions, that have no recognition or legitimacy whatsoever, which seek to overturn the internal order, the social wellbeing, and the political system we have chosen in a sovereign, democratic manner", states the final declaration approved by the 2nd Cuban Civil Society Forum "Thinking America". But he called on the region to take a harder line on Maduro's government, a message he intends to deliver in Brazil next month.

A press conference with U.S. Senator Marco Rubio took a heated turn when a journalist with Cuba's state-run newspaper Granma asked him about accepting campaign money from the National Rifle Association.

The vice president is to sit down with several Latin American leaders, including Chilean President Sebastian Pinera, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra and Argentine President Mauricio Macri.

He said the Trans Pacific Partnership agreement is "an ambitious trade deal that puts people first".

Unlike past appearances at global summits, the vice president had to dive into the packed agenda on short notice.

Bolivian President Evo Morales told his counterparts that the capitalist system allows corruption to prosper and said it should be dismantled.

The summit will also spotlight a tough moment for Latin American leaders.

"Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria".

But some who had traveled to Lima said the United States had lost sway.

Seated alongside Trudeau, Pence said there was a "real possibility" the US could reach a deal with Canada and Mexico on NAFTA "within the next several weeks".

Trudeau said that Canada will work with others to investigate the use of chemical weapons on Syrian civilians and that "those responsible must be brought to justice".
