In 1983, April was declared National Child Abuse Prevention Month by a Presidential proclamation.

A Platte County Court judge credited a Columbus mother on Thursday for making some changes in her parenting before setting a date for the city woman to be sentenced for her conviction of committing negligent child abuse nearly a year ago.

In exchange for her plea on Thursday, the county attorney's office dismissed a second negligent child abuse charge. Those numbers are local, but national numbers show that 1 in 4 girls become the victim of child abuse and 1 in 5 boys find themselves as child abuse victims. The public-awareness campaign created to bring awareness to child abuse, promote healthy families and raise funds to further those causes.

Park hoped the event spreads awareness to those who are unaware of the presence of child abuse in the community.
