The Coastal Carolina women's tennis and beach volleyball teams have received the Public Recognition Award from the NCAA for demonstrating academic excellence after scoring in the top 10 percent of their sports in the most recent Academic Progress Rates (APR), it was announced Wednesday.
Teams that fail to reach a four-year average April score of 930, which is the equivalent of a 50 percent graduation rate, or a 940 average for the most recent two years, can be penalized.
The women's tennis program has been honored 10 consecutive times, while the men's tennis program was recognized for the fifth time and fourth consecutive.
The NCAA's April is created to track the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship at a particular institution.

The APR includes eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation, and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.
The seven squads earning a Public Recognition Award marks a school record, besting the previous record of six teams recognized with the prestigious honor in 2012-13. The field hockey team, led by coach Char Morett, has received an NCAA Public Recognition Award nine times.
