Barcelona 1-2 a "great reward" for Mercedes says Andrew Shovlin

Valtteri Bottas was second on Sunday to cap a almost ideal weekend for the Mercedes drivers, who set the fastest times in practice and qualifying before Hamilton ultimately cruised to victory at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The trouble we have now is that with the modern cars carrying so much downforce, Turn 1 isn't a long braking zone and the only decent braking zone into Turn 10 comes after two corners where it's very hard to follow the vehicle in front. In 2016, there was the collision between Mercedes' Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton and a year ago Kimi Raikkonen and Max Verstappen were out of the running after the first turns. "Both Valtteri and Lewis have been on top form and the auto has been reliable and very fast".

"So I think it was the correct call, and it was our fault not to have the same tyre wear or life as other people".

The high-downforce 2017 rules package created much faster grand prix cars after a period of reducing speeds that started with a bid to remove downforce in 2009. "If we don't see those there are no excuses". We weren't happy with our car's performance and we needed to sort things out.

Despite their lack of pace in Spain, where not only were they not able to extract the same speed from their tyres as Mercedes but were also unable to coax them to last as long as the silver cars, the Italian team have had the most versatile vehicle so far this season.

In Spain, as in Australia, the stars aligned for them.

Vettel won the Monaco race past year, when Ferrari was 1-2 in qualifying and in the GP. Secondly, we struggled with the tyres. Mercedes responded by calling Bottas in a lap later but the Finn remained behind the Ferrari as he exited the pits. But, repeating their Spanish performance in Monaco will be easier said than done for Mercedes and it may yet be too early to hail this as a turning point in their campaign. Here we were able to step through a large programme of setup items, so Lewis has been able to get a good feel for the effect of these changes and hopefully that will help us get the most out of the auto at the upcoming races. I'm very interested to see what happens in Monaco next time out as they should be in better shape in qualifying.

Come the race and the first turn was as close as anyone was able to get to challenging the Englishman.

"But if we were to look at others, Daniel is definitely among them".

The race restarted at the end of the sixth lap in the same positions and was running smoothly, but then things started to go wrong for Ferrari.

Once again the Spanish Grand Prix provided the bulk of the action in the first lap, specifically in the first few corners. The delay in the pits saw Ocon drop from seventh to 14th.
