Pompeo said he had told North Korean leader Kim Jong Un of that hope during his brief visit to Pyongyang earlier this week, during which he finalized details of the upcoming June 12 summit between Kim and President Donald Trump and secured the release of three Americans imprisoned in the country.
The US would be "prepared to work with North Korea to achieve prosperity on the par with our South Korean friends", he told reporters on Friday.
At the meeting with Trump, the prime minister intends to reach a common understanding with the USA president on how to handle the nuclear and missile issue and again request that he raise the abduction issue.
China looks forward to positive results from the meeting, said the spokesperson, adding that important steps must be taken to promote the denuclearization of the peninsula through political solutions to realize long-term stability in the region.
However, his comments made clear that the two sides remained far apart on the key issue of what they mean by denuclearisation.

Pompeo, describing his conversations with Kim as "warm", said he and the North Korean leader reached "a pretty good understanding between our two countries about what the shared objectives are". Singapore is the best alternative option for both nations because it has maintained close diplomatic ties to the U.S., and has also established relations with North Korea, with a North Korean Embassy on its soil. "It will make it more hard for Kim Jong Un to deny inspections now that he has placed them on the table".
