"The People of Iran have shown that they resist bullying", he said.

On May 23, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Paris would continue to implement the accord even if it did agree with the USA that Iran's ballistic missile activity and regional hegemonic ambitions needed to be curbed.

"There is no doubt that the Americans will be defeated... provided Iranian officials fully perform their duties", he added.

He further said Britain, France and Germany must pledge they would not seek negotiations on Iran's ballistic missile programme and on its regional activities, both of which were not covered by the nuclear pact but are now demanded by Washington.

Pompeo vowed to levy the "strongest sanctions in history" on Tehran unless it abandons its nuclear program and halts what the US has criticized as destabilizing activity in the Middle East.

Trump, however, said a "real, comprehensive and lasting solution to the Iran nuclear threat" was being worked on by the USA and its allies.

He warned that if the Europeans did not meet these demands, Iran would resume its enrichment of uranium, halted under the deal to minimise the risk of Tehran developing the means to build nuclear weapons.

Iranian state television said that Trump's decision to withdraw was "illegal, illegitimate and undermines global agreements".

"Pompeo and other U.S. officials are trapped in old illusions".

Senior officials from the remaining parties to the accord - Britain, China, France, Germany and Russian Federation - will meet their Iranian counterpart on Friday in Vienna.
