School budget votes and board elections to be held Tuesday

Polls were open Tuesday in many school districts across Long Island for residents to vote on proposed budgets totaling almost $13 billion, along with contested board races featuring 207 candidates in 56 districts. The District's auditors found no moderate or serious problems with financial compliance requirements and said the district's budgetary statements represent an accurate picture.

Earlier this month, district officials provided details on the proposed spending plan that was approved by the school board, and the plan includes a tax increase for residents.

Disregarding opposition from teachers and local leaders, IN lawmakers overwhelmingly voted Monday to strip power from the Gary and Muncie school boards, potentially eliminate the Muncie teachers union and place the district under outside control - and exempt it from required annual performance reports. If you live in a school district with a budget vote tomorrow, "vote" should be on the list - 17,581 children need to know you care enough about education to opt into the process.

With school districts restricted in how much they can raise the tax levy, voters have less fear of high tax increases.

Also in Watervliet, taxpayers will vote for four candidates who are vying for two at-large school board seats. They also are looking for ways to keep better the food served in schools.

Smith said each finalist will spend one day in the district touring schools and the community and interacting with board members, employees and the public.

If Mechanicville's school budget proposal passes as expected Tuesday, the district will hire a full-time school resource officer starting in the fall.

My hope is that all eligible Waterloo School District voters get out to vote Tuesday at the District Office (across from the skate park on Washington Street) from noon to 9 p.m.

The district is also seeing a significant rise in its special education budget, which is up to $1.62 million from $1.56 million.

In recent years, teachers, staff and administration have recognized the increasing needs of mainstream students unable to manage their emotions and behavior.

This will go into effect for the 2018-2019 school year.

The proposed budget would increase the tax rate to 13.6338 mills.

In Hampton Bays, voters will be asked to cast ballots approving its proposed $52.5 million operating budget for the 2018-19 school year. Transportation costs and M&O (Maintenance and Operations) expenditures (water, gas, electricity, and building upkeep) have increased $150.00 per FTE (Full Time Equivalent student) in the past five years.

Polling hours are from 7:30 a.m.to 8 p.m.at Schools 2, 12, 14, 16, 18, and CHS.

Voters will decide on the 2018-19 general budget as well as a proposition to purchase two 66-passenger school buses and for one seat on the board of education.
