A wildfire erupted Tuesday in an area of Colorado known for its ski resorts, forcing the evacuation of more than 1,300 homes and marking the latest in a series of blazes that have ignited in the drought-stricken U.S. West.

Over 1,300 homes have been evacuated by a new wildfire burning in Colorado's mountains.

Officials said one small outbuilding was lost but no injuries have been reported.

"If it were not for this fire break, along with aggressive air attack and ground support, these two subdivisions most likely would have significant fire damage or be destroyed", Berino said.

A 32-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 550, which has served as a buffer for homes on the eastern edge of the fire, was closed, officials said.

Anyone caught violating the order could be found guilty of a Class B misdemeanor and face a fine of $5,000 for individuals or $10,000 for organizations, and/or imprisonment.

The SJNF covers 1.8 million acres within the Dolores Ranger District, the Columbine Ranger District, and the Pagosa Ranger District across nine counties in southwestern Colorado.

Gov. John Hickenlooper said the state was allocating many resources for the fires in the states.

UPDATE (2 p.m.): According to the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland Twitter, the communities of Beehive, Gramm, & Miller Lake communities are being evacuated by Albany County officials.

The 416 Fire - named after its emergency service call number - is by far the largest of at least a half-dozen blazes raging across Colorado.

"It's going to come down to a point there, and that's what we're striving to achieve there, is to get that all nicely brought together", Knight said.

"Residents of over 2,000 homes have been ordered to evacuate because of a fire that started in the forest north of Durango, which doubled in size to about 25 square miles over the weekend". Both state and local public health agencies have issued air quality advisories to stay inside until smoke clears, and have warned those who have health risks to be extra cautious.

The report said containment was not expected before the end of the month. Natural wildfires tend to occur in sparsely populated areas of the Mountain West, the study showed.
