All 11 Virginia Congressional Districts and one United States Senate seat is up for election this November.

Only 15 of the 99 competitive seats are now held by Democrats, while 84 are held by Republicans.

"The number of contested races at the top of the ticket is unusual", said Belangia.

Those two contests will be among the most closely watched in Tuesday's round of primaries that also include contests in Virginia, South Carolina and Maine.

This office is now held by Scott Taylor of Virginia Beach.

The state's tilt toward Democrats in recent years gives the party reason for some optimism.

Traditionally, only 15 percent of registered voters turn out for primaries.

This is the first in a series of articles on the 2018 mid term elections in the 99 competitive races in the House of Representatives. In the swing state of Nevada, Democratic Representative Jacky Rosen is expected to sail to the nomination to face vulnerable Republican Senator Dean Heller.

Heitkamp, a former state attorney general, is popular in North Dakota. He enjoys high name recognition and has a hefty campaign account. As voters head into the polls, six Democrats are still competing.

U.S. lauds its ties with Taiwan on dedication of new office
The U.S. switched diplomatic recognition to Beijing in 1979 but maintains close economic, political and security ties with Taiwan. That's because despite its innocuous name, the organization has long functioned as the de facto U.S.

Her relationship with Mr. Trump is more complicated, though. Trump has appeared with Heitkamp, and she was the only Democrat invited to the White House for the signing of the banking law.

And in the 6th and 9th districts, Democrats will pick their candidates for Congress.

Fifty-one of the 99 competitive races are in those eight states-California (10), Pennsylvania (9), Florida (7), OH (5), Minnesota (5), New Jersey (5), NY (5), and MI (5).

On Sunday, Giunchigliani's campaign released a 1-minute robocall featuring the former Democratic presidential nominee. Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-VA-10)-assuming she withstands her own primary challenge on Tuesday from Shak Hill.

In the second district, which includes the Hampton Roads area, both Democrats running to challenge incumbent Republican Representative Scott Taylor are women.

Democrats will decide between Elaine Luria and Karen Mallard. Tim Kaine (D- Virginia), those candidates have already won their party's nominations.

That's because Democrats Abigail Spanberger and Dan Ward are facing off in the 7th U.S. House District race. The victor will challenge GOP Representative Dave Brat, who is seen as potentially vulnerable. Arrington has sought to use Sanford's frequent criticism of Trump as a wedge with GOP primary voters. It lets voters rank candidates by preference rather than choosing just one. In Arlington County, voters will choose between two Democrats to run against incumbent County Board member John Vihstadt (I).

Now, whether you vote Democrat or Republican you're going to notice two questions on the ballot.
