Putin heads to Beijing for state visit with birthday buddy Xi Jinping

Asked for his impression of the Chinese leader for life, Putin said Xi was "approachable and sincere", as well as "perhaps the only state leader who has celebrated my birthday with me". "I see this as an acknowledgement and an evaluation of Russia's efforts to develop a comprehensive strategic partnership with China", he said, making only passing mention of "our personal friendship".

Putin spoke Sunday at a gathering of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Qingdao, China.

Earlier this year the White House refused to impose sanctions on Russian Federation that were passed into law nearly unanimously last year and was created to punish Moscow's alleged meddling in the 2016 United States election.

The US leader has repeatedly said he wants to improve relationships with Moscow.

Russian Federation was expelled from what was then called the G8 in 2014 because of its annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.

He said that the Chinese President was the only state leader "who celebrated his birthday with him", sharing vodka and sausage. They should let Russian Federation come back in. "If it doesn't happen, we come out even better!" he added. "We should have Russian Federation at the negotiating table". They should let Russian Federation back in.

Speaking on background, Canadian officials said Ottawa's position hasn't changed and they believe that Russia's illegal annexation and occupation of Crimea disqualifies Moscow from participation.

Trump torpedoes G7 effort to ease trade spat
Trudeau addressed the president's Twitter blasts while visiting Quebec's Saguenay region on Thursday. In the end, that language stayed in and it was only on climate change that no consensus was reached.

The SCO was first announced in 2001 by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Trump's rejection of the global climate accord and Iran nuclear deal, supported by the European Union and Canada is going to be another flashpoint in the increasingly acrimonious relationship between Washington and its Western allies. This summit is the first since India and Pakistan were accepted as full members of the SCO in June 2017, a sign of increased cooperation between Eastern nations.

Tension has been building over a year of policymaking that has distanced the United States from traditional allies, including by Trump's decisions to withdraw the USA from the Paris climate accord and the Iran nuclear agreement.

He adds Moscow will continue to honor its obligations under the Iranian nuclear deal.

"Today crystallises precisely why Putin was so eager to see Trump elected", said Ned Price, a former Central Intelligence Agency analyst and the National Security Council spokesman under then-President Barack Obama.

Trump's deteriorating relationships with Trudeau and Macron - both of whom he has previously lavished with praise - come as the US finds itself increasingly isolated from key allies over Trump's isolationist policies, including his decisions to pull out of the Paris climate agreement and to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal.
