Secrecy Lifted on Kim Jong-un's Latest China Trip

More Americans favor than oppose ending sanctions created to limit North Korea's economy (37 percent to 27 percent), and a large majority - 69 percent - say they'd favor a treaty marking an official end to the Korean War.

While an agreement to complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization (CVID) between American and North Korean officials was nothing but a pipe dream, there was hope that President Donald Trump would be able to extract significant commitments from Kim Jong-un in return for simply agreeing to meet him.

Before meeting with Xi on Wednesday, Kim visited an agricultural institute run by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences where he observed vegetables being grown inside, Korean and Chinese media reports.

Chinese state media quoted Chinese president Mr Xi as hailing the warming friendship with Kim but included no mention of any specific discussions on making progress on the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.

He made the comments just hours after Mr. Trump escalated his trade feud with China with a threat to impose tariffs of 10 percent on another $200 billion worth of Chinese goods in retaliation for Beijing's disputed intellectual property practices and its aggressive response to previous US tariffs, a move Chinese officials said they were willing to match. Chinese state-run broadcaster CGTN also reported on Kim Jong-un's third visit to China and his talks with Xi Jinping on Tuesday where Xi said China will remain committed to solidifying its ties with the North. regardless of any changes on the global and regional fronts.

On Wednesday, South Korean foreign minister Kang Kyung-hwa said the decision to suspend the exercise could be reconsidered based on future developments with North Korea. "Now we are going to have to talk about how to achieve that, and I think you will see diplomatic engagement proceed very quickly", he said.

Former president Barack Obama supported South Korea's rejection of a nuclearized North Korea and said threats from North Korea would result in its isolation from the global community.

Mr Xi said China is pleased that "the momentum for dialogue and easing of the situation on the Korean Peninsula has been effectively strengthened".

North Korea could start the process of handing over the remains of troops, including Americans, missing from the Korean War within the next few days, two U.S. officials told Reuters on Tuesday.

"Preparations continue" to receive the remains, the USA official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

More than 36,500 U.S. troops died in the 1950-1953 Korean War. In return Trump ordered the suspension of military exercises with South Korea, a longstanding demand of the Pyongyang regime.

A majority of Americans - 52 percent - have little to no confidence that negotiations with Kim will lead to North Korea giving up its nuclear weapons, while just 12 percent are very or extremely confident.

"No matter the changes in the worldwide and regional situation, China's party and government's resolute position on being dedicated to consolidating and developing Sino-North Korea relations will not change", he was quoted as saying.

"This is the first time I have met someone with the same kind of guts", Kim reportedly said of Pompeo.
