Trump deepens G7 divide with call to readmit Russia

This year's G7 summit, which begins Friday in Canada, is set to be unusually ill-tempered, with the us facing off against the other six in the group: Germany, France, Italy, Canada, Japan and the United Kingdom.

The comments come one day after Trump called Trudeau "indignant" on Twitter Thursday night, and referenced a tariff of up to "300% on dairy" saying he was hurting USA farmers.

The annual G-7 (Group of Seven) meeting is scheduled to take place in Quebec, Canada, on Friday and Saturday.

"We will have, this evening, a group discussion on North Korea - and you will have a very important meeting in Singapore - on Syria, on Iran", Macron told Trump in front of reporters in Quebec on Friday. European union treats us very unfairly.

McCain's blast at Trump is the latest salvo in his ongoing criticisms of the president.

"The American president may not mind being isolated", Macron tweeted, "but neither do we mind signing a 6-country agreement if need be".

The tariffs, as well as broader disagreements on trade, climate change and the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear agreement, are setting the stage for some tense face-to-face meetings here once Trump arrives Friday at the Quebec summit.

The president said he was unconcerned about raising a trade ruckus at the gathering that usually emphasizes unity and downplays its disagreements.

While the G7 chiefs have largely praised Trump for his efforts to stabilize the Korean peninsula, they are unhappy he pulled out of an agreement created to limit Iran's nuclear ambitions. "His preference now, and he asked me to convey this, is to actually negotiate with Mexico and Canada separately", Kudlow said on Fox News on Tuesday.

Thursday, Trump took aim at Trudeau and Macron, accusing them of benefiting from one-sided trade arrangements with the United States.

Mr Trump's imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminium imports has sparked anger, with even United States allies falling subject to them.

At the White House, Abe offered Trump praise for his denuclearization efforts in the Korean Peninsula, telling him it was an outstanding achievement that past USA presidents have been unable to accomplish.

Meantime, Italy's new premier is backing Trump's call, tweeting his support on Friday. Canada and Mexico, the other members of the 1994 pact, have been frustrated by the slow pace of talks to renegotiate NAFTA.

Russian Federation was suspended from the group - then known as the G8 - in 2014 after the majority of member countries allied against Russia's annexation of Crimea, which Russian Federation continues to hold. Ben Sasse (R-NE), one of several Republicans to hit back at Trump's suggestion.

Despite the drama, Trump and Trudeau had a cordial greeting today, shaking hands and smiling for photographers on the lawn outside the resort overlooking the St Lawrence River. Three days after taking office, Trump formally withdrew the US from another such landmark deal, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which the Obama administration negotiated with 11 Pacific rim nations.
