Apollo astronaut: Colonization is ‘certainly feasible’ on the moon

But Aldrin said he and his fellow astronauts never doubted the equipment that had brought them to the moon would bring them back home.

As the world remembers well, it was fellow astronaut Neil Armstrong who first stepped onto the moon on July 20, 1969.

Items from the collection will be sold in a series of auctions handled by Dallas-based Heritage Auctions beginning Nov. 1-2 and continuing in May and November of next year.

Today (July 20) is the 49th anniversary of Apollo 11.

"I think he would be pleased to be remembered as being part of a program that demonstrated fantastic things can be achieved when people come together to dedicate themselves towards a common goal", his son Rick Armstrong said.

Neil Armstrong's collection includes a variety of artifacts from his 1969 lunar landing, as well as private mementos.

Greg Rohan, president of Heritage Auctions, said it handles numerous categories of collectibles that appeal to various collectors, but items connected with space seem to have a universal appeal.

Among the more personal items to be auctioned are a Purdue University centennial flag from Armstrong's alma mater that traveled on Apollo 11 and his Boy Scout cap.

"Space is one of the very, very few categories that every single person seems to be interested in", Rohan said in a statement.

NASA is planning to have a moon space station in place within 10 years, giving astronauts a way to live in the moon's orbit and land frequently on its surface. These medals were commissioned by the Apollo crew themselves and were flown to space during all the Apollo missions, including Apollo 11.

You will find the items went to the moon with him, such as a US flag, a United Nations flag, several state flags, as well as some Robbins Medallions.

"There will be flown products, autographed products and products of historic significance".
