"That section cites information from "Source #1", who alleged that during a trip to Moscow in July 2016, Page met secretly with two sanctioned Kremlin insiders, Igor Sechin and Igor Diveykin, as part of a collusion scheme involving the Trump campaign", reports The DCNF's Chuck Ross.

The FISA request also argues that Christopher Steele, whose salacious Trump dossier was in part paid for by Fusion GPS that received funding from the Democratic National Committee and Clinton's Campaign, was "never advised as to motivation behind the research" into Trump's ties to Russian Federation.

The report claims that Page allegedly met with Igor Sechin, CEO of the state-run oil giant Rosneft, with whom they allegedly "discussed future bilateral energy cooperation" and the prospects of lifting western sanctions imposed on Russian Federation following its reunification of Crimea in 2014. The document refers to Mr Trump as candidate # 1. He later said he meant that he had no reason to believe that Russian Federation "wouldn't" have interfered in the election.

The memo also backfired by inadvertently confirming that the Steele dossier was not the primary factor jumpstarting the Russian Federation inquiry. "The Rigged Witch Hunt, headed by the 13 Angry Democrats (and now 4 more have been added, one who worked directly for Obama W.H.), seems intent on damaging the Republican Party's chances in the November Election" President Trump tweeted.

The documents show that former FBI Director James Comey and former deputy director of the FBI Andrew McCabe certified the requests to wiretap Page over several 90-day periods.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the ranking member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, said the documents "affirm that our nation faced a profound counterintelligence threat prior to the 2016 election" and that authorities "took appropriate steps".

The secretive court signed off on surveilling Page.

He lamented that the materials were released during a pending investigation.

Labour has demanded the resignations of the two senior Tories if they fail to give a full explanation over the whipping operation. One Tory MP told the paper: " This suggests a worrying pattern of behaviour and could amount to a breach of trust ".

Republican Senator Marco Rubio, the author of a bill that would impose severe sanctions on Russia if it was determined to have interfered in a United States election, said Trump should approach meetings with Putin without illusions about the Russian leader's endgame.

The dossier, which was opposition research funded by the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton campaign, contains salacious allegations against Trump.

Republicans have claimed that law enforcement officials had improperly obtained a warrant to monitor Mr page, accusing the Federal Bureau of Investigation of abusing its intelligence powers, while Mr Trump called it an "illegal scam".

Schiff said Trump is "acting like someone who is compromised by Russian Federation". "I sat in on some meetings, but to call me an adviser I think is way over the top".

Tapper read from a document that Page once described himself as "informal adviser" to the Kremlin.

"It's really spin", Page said.

The FBI noted stories published in US media that confirmed Page's two meetings and revealed candidate Trump's softening stance on Russian Federation.

Trump's statements on Twitter followed sharp criticism, including from some Republicans, of his meeting in Finland last week with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
