In his opening remarks to the media before a closed-door meeting with Putin, Trump said that getting along with Russian Federation would be a "good thing, not a bad thing".

This morning, Trump tweeted: "Our relationship with Russian Federation has NEVER been worse thanks to many years of USA foolishness and stupidity and now, the Rigged Witch Hunt!"

Trump is under heavy pressure to tell Putin to stay out of USA elections when they meet, and he said Friday that he would.

Trump made the brief prediction Monday at a breakfast at Finland's presidential residence in Helsinki.

"I think the world really wants to see us get along". That's because talks between the US and Russian Federation could be viewed by Putin's inner circle as evidence Washington is finally willing to recognize Moscow as a great power on the worldwide stage.

"He just said it's not Russia", Trump said during a news conference following talks between the two leaders.

"Russia's a foe in certain respects", Trump said, adding, "China is a foe economically, certainly they are a foe".

It is believed that Putin and the Russians tried to do damage to Clinton because they preferred Trump win the election.

The Kremlin said it did not expect much from the meeting but hoped it would be a "first step" to resolving a crisis in ties. "There is no clear agenda".

Trump himself branded the Robert Mueller probe a "Rigged Witch Hunt" on twitter just hours before he was to meet Putin. He claimed Mr Obama "was informed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation about Russian Meddling, he said it couldn't happen, was no big deal, & did NOTHING about it". Other issues expected to come up include Russian election meddling, Crimea, and Syria. "President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today". "It will be determined by the heads of state themselves as they go along".
